As great antidote to all the criticism swirling around the sexist nature of the Oscars (not to mention all the armchair criticism of the dresses and beauty looks — of which I am indeed guilty!), tune in TONIGHT, Tues, Feb 26th, to what is going to be one of the biggest, best TV moments of the entire year: MAKERS: Women Who Make America – The Documentary airing on PBS at 8 p.m. (check local listings here).

IT LOOKS SO GOOD! Here’s how PBS describes it:

Over the last half-century, America has seen one of the most sweeping social revolutions in its history, as women have asserted their rights to a full and fair share of political power, economic opportunity, and personal autonomy. It’s a revolution that has unfolded in public and private, on grand stages like the Supreme Court and Congress, and in humbler ones like the boardroom and the bedroom. No individual and no aspect of American life has been unchanged.

MAKERS: Women Who Make America will tell this remarkable story for the first time in a comprehensive and innovative three-hour documentary for PBS, to air in early 2013. Built on the extraordinary archive of stories already completed for MAKERS.com, the film will feature the stories of those who led the fight, those who opposed it, and the unintentional trailblazers — famous and unknown – who carried change to every corner of society.

MAKERS, presented by Simple Skincare, will recount the seminal events of the organized women’s movement from the publication of The Feminine Mystique in 1963 to the Anita Hill vs. Clarence Thomas hearings in 1991. But it’s also going to focus on the personal lives – the struggles, the accomplishments — of SO MANY of our female heros, from Judy Blume to Oprah Winfrey (and Katie Couric and Hillary Clinton and Gloria Steinem and surfer Bethany Hamilton and Ellen Degeneres and so many more!) … and of “regular” women as well.

Look, I love Mad Men as much as the next girl, but it is so good to be reminded of how much has changed in the short time since the era of Don Draper — and how many people worked and fought to make those changes. Today, we may want to dress like Joan and Betty, but we, thank GOD, aren’t stuck with their limited choices in life.
